Our Guide to Furnace Filter Replacement: How Often Should You Change It?

Updated: Jun 27, 2023

Regularly changing the furnace filter is an important maintenance task that can greatly impact the efficiency and longevity of your HVAC system. But how often should you be replacing your furnace filter?

The answer to this question largely depends on a variety of factors such as the type of filter, the level of usage, and the presence of pets or allergies in your household. As a general rule of thumb, it is recommended that you replace your furnace filter every 1-3 months.

For those with a basic fiberglass filter, which is the least expensive option, it should be replaced every 1-2 months. If you have a higher quality pleated filter, which is more effective at trapping dust and allergens, you can typically go up to 3 months before needing a replacement.

However, if you have pets or family members with allergies, it's best to err on the side of caution and replace the filter more frequently to ensure good indoor air quality. Similarly, if you have a larger household with more people, the filter may need to be replaced more frequently due to increased usage.

It's also important to note that neglecting to change your furnace filter can result in reduced airflow, decreased efficiency, and even damage to your HVAC system. So, make sure to mark your calendar and replace your filter on a regular basis to keep your home comfortable and your system running smoothly.
